President of the Assembly of States Parties welcomes signature of cooperation agreements between Argentina and the ICC

 ICC-ASP-20180301-PR1361

The President of the Assembly of States Parties, Mr. O-Gon Kwon (Republic of Korea), has commended yesterday’s signature of two cooperation agreements between Argentina and the International Criminal Court (ICC).

Argentina is the second country to sign a cooperation agreement on interim release, and the first country to sign a cooperation agreement on release of persons. With these signatures, Argentina has become the first country to sign all four of the cooperation agreements which have been developed by the ICC.

“I am encouraged by this significant step towards enhanced cooperation.Cooperation is one of the cornerstones of the Rome Statute system and the Court cannot succeed without it. It is particularly significant that these signatures have taken place in 2018, twenty years since the signing of the Rome Statute. I hope that other States will be inspired to join Argentina, and the other States who have already signed cooperation agreements, in supporting the Court in this very tangible way” said President Kwon.

The ICC relies on the cooperation of States in many aspects of its work, andcooperation agreements – negotiated bilateral agreements between the Court and States Parties – are an essential tool for that cooperation. With these two agreements, the ICC has now signed a total of 31 cooperation agreements. Further information on cooperation agreements is available at the ICC’s website: https://www.icc-cpi.int/news/seminarBooks/Cooperation_Agreements_Eng.pdf.

The Assembly of States Parties is the management oversight and legislative body of the ICC, comprised of representatives of the States that have ratified and acceded to the Rome Statute. President Kwon was elected President of the Assembly for a three year mandate in December 2017.
