03.04.2019 The Bureau of the Assembly of States Parties adopted the Terms of Reference for the Election of the Prosecutor 
 
07.06.2019

The Bureau decided to designate the following persons as members of the Committee on the Election of the Prosecutor:

(a) Ambassador Marcin Czepelak (Poland);
    (b) Mr. Lamin Faati (Gambia);
    (c) Ambassador Andreas Mavroyiannis (Cyprus);
    (d) Ambassador Sabine Nölke (Canada);
    (e) Ambassador Mario Oyarzábal (Argentina).

The Bureau decided to appoint the following persons as members of the panel of experts to assist the Committee on the Election of the Prosecutor in carrying out its mandate:

    (a) Mr. Francisco Cox Vial, (Chile);
    (b) Ms. Aurélia Devos (France);
    (c) Prof. Charles Jalloh (Sierra Leone);
    (d) Mr. Motoo Noguchi (Japan);
    (e) Ms. Anna Richterova (Czech Republic).

 

 

23.07.2019 The Committee on the Election of the Prosecutor designated Ambassador Sabine Nölke as Chair and Ambassador Andreas Mavroyiannis as Vice-Chair 
   
02.08.2019 The vacancy announcement for the position of the Prosecutor was published
   
01.11.2019 The deadline for applications for the position of the Prosecutor was extended until 25 November 2019
   
01.11.2019 The Committee on the Election of the Prosecutor submitted its interim report to the Bureau of the Assembly of States Parties (ICC-ASP/18/INF.4)
   
29.11.2019 The Committee on the Election of the Prosecutor submitted an addendum to its interim report to the Bureau (ICC-ASP/18/INF.4/Add.1)
   
03.12.2019 The Panel of Experts met in The Hague on 2 and 3 December 2019 to review the completed applications for the position of Prosecutor, and subsequently submitted a confidential report to the Committee.
   
21.02.2020 The Committee met in New York on 20 and 21 February 2020 to review the completed applications and the recommendations from the Panel of Experts. The Committee decided on a confidential list of 16 candidates to be interviewed.
   
May-June 2020 The Committee and Panel of Experts conducted the interviews via remote-link.
   
30.06.2020 The Committee submitted its report to the Bureau containing a shortlist of four candidates for the consideration of the Assembly (ICC-ASP/19/INF.2, Add.1 and Add.2).
             
29-30.07.2020 Public hearings with the four candidates shortlisted by the Committee of the Election of the Prosecutor 
   
07.09.2020 The President of the Assembly wrote to States Parties outlining the modalities for the consultation process.
   
13.11.2020 The Bureau of the Assembly of States Parties adopted the “Election of the Prosecutor: Way forward”
   
25.11.2020 The Committee submitted an addendum to its report containing five additional candidates for the consideration of the Assembly (ICC-ASP/19/INF.2/Add.3 and Add.4).
   
9-10.12.2020 Public hearings with the expanded list of candidates
   
11.12.2020 The Bureau of the Assembly adopted modalities for the consultation process to identify a consensus candidate
   
11.12.2020 – 03.02.2021 Four rounds of informal consultations were held, between 11 December 2020 and 3 February 2021, with the support of the five focal points appointed pursuant to the “Way forward”.
   
08.02.2021 The President informed States Parties that, despite the best efforts of the President, the Vice-Presidents and the focal points, it had not been possible to achieve consensus. The nomination period was extended for a final time, until 10 February 2021, to allow time for nominations.
   
10.02.2021 The Secretariat received formal nominations of four candidates: CASTRESANA FERNÁNDEZ, Carlos (Spain); GAYNOR, Fergal (Ireland); KHAN, Karim (United Kingdom);  and LO VOI, Francesco (Italy).
   
12.02.2021 The Assembly of States Parties elected Mr. Karim Khan (United Kingdom) as the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court for a nine year term commencing 16 June 2021.
